Sandyville man to 'take the plunge' Dave Collier will participate in Polar Bear Jump to raise funds for Helping Hands

The ad read "WANTED: Warm-hearted people willing to freeze their bodies to raise money to feed people and fight hunger."

Sandyville resident and Sandy Valley Local Schools Board of Education President Dave Collier answered the ad and accepted the challenge.

On Sat., Feb. 16, Collier will join hundreds of jumpers in the 10th annual Polar Bear Jump to benefit the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank. This will be Collier's first polar bear jump.

"I am excited to be part of this event," Collier says. "The Akron Canton Regional Food Bank is a great cause, serving the people right here in the Sandy Valley community with its support of The Helping Hands Network."

Participants in the event seek sponsors to donate money to get them to jump. Last year's event brought out around 750 jumpers, raising a combined $85,000. This year's overall goal is $100,000. Jumpers then plunge into the frigid waters of the Portage Lakes.

Collier says so far the reaction to his joining the Polar Bear Plunge has been mostly positive, with donors offering their support and stating they were glad it was him, and not them doing the jump.

According to the agency's website, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank provides food and other essential items to member agencies in eight Northeast Ohio counties: Carroll, Holmes, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne. These member agencies operate more than 450 programs like food pantries, hot meal sites, shelters and other hunger-relief programs in the neighborhoods and communities where people need food. One in three people served by the agency is a child under 18 years of age.

Collier is currently seeking sponsorships. Individuals, families, organizations and businesses are all encouraged to donate, and Collier points out that every dollar raised is important. "With each dollar the food bank receives, they are able to provide four meals," Collier said. "So even if you can give just a dollar, you have fed a family of four one meal!"

Donating is easy, and an online option is available. Checks payable to: "Akron Canton Regional Food Bank" may be mailed or dropped off to Collier.
