SV Academic Challenge competition to air Saturday

The Sandy Valley High School Academic Challenge team recently competed on Cleveland television station WEWS channel 5's Academic Challenge show.

The show, which was taped on Nov. 4, is set to air on Saturday.

Several family members of the team were at the taping to watch Sandy Valley win the competition against teams from Coventry and Edison high schools.

Hosted by WEWS meteorologist Jason Nicholas, the show format consists of five rounds.

Three rounds are competitive and two are non-competitive.

Most questions come from basic high school curriculum covering math, science, geography, literature and history. Also included are general information questions on subjects such as sports, music, mythology and art.

Questions are from material one would reasonably expect a high school student to know, and are not intended to stump contestants with tricky or obscure questions.

Members of the team competing were seniors Michael Shinton, Joey McNeely (captain), and Michael Thomas. Alternates were seniors Cody Habrun and Brooke Cline. Other members of the team are seniors Victoria Keim, Symone Ferrell, Jessica Steffl and Emily Herstine; junior Joey Gross; sophomore Christian Cline; and freshmen Kris Forbes, Justin Pfouts, Laurana Smith and Dylan Martin.

The team is coached by Jann Coates, and assistant principal Matt Whitted accompanied the team to the taping.
