Tuesday, Sept. 7, will begin a new era for students and staff at East Canton Schools-Osnaburg Local. That is the day the new kindergarten through 12th-grade facility will open and classes will begin for the 2010-11 school year.
Excitement and anticipation are the words used by superintendent Melissa Marconi, Ph.D.
"We are looking forward to the school year, and we have a lot to live up to," Marconi said about the school, once again being designated by the state as "excellent." Marconi said this is the first time the school has met all of its indicators, as well as meeting the Adequate Yearly Progress requirement, which is a federally required measure.
A grand opening and open house has been set for today, Sept. 2. A ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a reception at 10:45. An open house will be held later in the day, 4:30-8 p.m. for all students. Class schedules will be available and classrooms will be open so students and parents can visit with teachers and staff. Homeroom assignments will be posted on door 6 by 3 p.m. Sept. 1.
Marconi will continue as superintendent and former high school principal Chris Corbi will be the operations manager. He can be reached at 330-488-0334. Other changes of personnel on the district level include former middle school secretary Diana Heath becoming secretary for the superintendent and Mrs. Judy Talbott and Mrs. Beth Williams working in the human rescources/pupil personnel area.
Early dismissal days are new aspects of the school calendar in 2010-11. On Sept. 15, Nov. 17, Jan. 19, Feb. 16 and April 20 students will leave the school about one and one-half hours early. However, teachers will stay at the school for professional development. Marconi said latchkey will be extended that day and busing will take other students home at dismissal time. Furthermore, study tables and activities will be planned during those days for any younger students who would have an after-school activity, so that they would not have to leave school and come back.
