CANTON TOWNSHIP -- At their regular meeting last week, the board of trustees addressed a possible annexation by the city of Canton and announced three openings of new township businesses.
To open the meeting, the board approved of the minutes from a special meeting held on Aug. 13. The minutes stated that trustees opposed "the proposed annexation of land from Canton Township into the city of Canton commonly referred to as the Army-Navy annexation."
Later, trustee Bill Smith addressed the situation. Smith said the city misfiled some paperwork regarding the annexation. He also said the township and the city are not on the same page and the two sides need to be in order for the annexation to be done correctly.
He said the township may hold an emergency meeting to "fork off or pass the annexation."
During the zoning report, zoning inspector Jon Smith announced three new businesses will be opening in the township -- Lite House Floral, Cavilon Cleaners and Bird House Deli.
He recommended announcing the openings on the front page of the township's website to help promote the businesses. Smith said the businesses followed the township's zoning regulations and they should be rewarded for doing so.
Trustee Christopher Nichols said he has considered adding a business directory on the township website. He said trustees received calls from residents after distributing high grass violations, and some residents were asking trustees if they knew of a lawn mowing businesses in the township. Nichols said a business directory would help residents along those lines.
Fire Chief Scott McKibben asked for the board's approval for a resolution consenting to a contract awarded to Riverside Metal Craft to WHP Training Towers. The contract allows the company to be the primary contractors for a mobile training tower. It also allows the township to use a grant from Federal Emergency Management Agency to pay for the training tower.
McKibben received the trustees' approval for the resolution.
