During the regular Sandy Valley Board of Education meeting on Monday, board members recognized two long-time educators who will be stepping away.

Elementary Title Teacher Colleen Flanagan and Middle School/High School counselor James Rarric will resign/retire from their positions at the end of the school year. The two educators have 75 combined years of teaching experience.

Flanagan was at the board meeting on Monday and accepted a standing ovation from those in attendance. She also received a thank you card from the board of education.

"They both will be missed and very difficult to be replaced," said Sandy Valley superintendent David Janofa.

Board members also heard presentations from four students who will show their science fair projects at the district competition. Alysse Bowling showed how age affects hearing loss and Casey Dobransky talked about music affecting the memory of fourth graders. Dominic Pryor showed if Mountain Dew or coke is faster at dissolving an egg. Nancy Sheckler discussed bridge durability.

Destination Imagination coordinator Kristen Woods also gave a presentation to board members. Woods has three groups of students who will compete at the regional tournament on Saturday in Salem. Destination Imagination is a creative problem solving program that is solely student driven.

Woods has two separate groups of fifth-grade students and sixth-grade students in the "You're gonna flip" competition. These students will experiment with puppets to help solve their problem. Another group of sixth grade students will be in the "DI-Bot" competition and will work with robot technology. All three groups of students have a chance to advance to the global competition at the University of Tennessee.
