Sandy royalty is crowned

Sandy Valley High School celebrated winter homecoming last week when Brittany Tozzi and Cody Welker were crowned as queen and king.

Senior basketball player Corey Fisher and senior wrestler Dutch Kirkman escorted queen Brittany Tozzi. The daughter of Mike and Chris Tozzi of Magnolia, Brittany has earned letters in gymnastics, cheerleading and track. She has also earned several honors as a gymnast and as a member of the track tream. Brittany has performed in the school musicals and works at Tozzi's on 12th. She is a member of St. James Youth group, Student Council, National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society.

Following graduation, Brittany plans to attend college to study radiology.

Girls basketball captain Danielle Grooms and senior cheerleader Lyndi Power escorted king Cody Welker. The son of Jeff and Amy Welker of Waynesburg, has earned letters in football, basketball and baseball. He has also earned numerous post-season honors in all three sports, including the All-IVC team, all-county and All-Ohio, special mention this past season in football. In addition to athletics, Cody is a member of science club, and he attended Buckeye Boys State last summer.

Following graduation, he plans to attend a college to study either education of physical therapy and to hopefully play football.

Tasha Otte was the senior attendant. Tasha, the daughter of Rhonda Otte of Dellroy, has earned varsity letters in gymnastics, cheerleading and cross country. She is an honor roll student and plans to attend the University of Akron.

The senior escort-- Howie O'Neill, the son of Howard and Christa O'Neill of Waynesburg, plays basketball and is a letterwinner in baseball. Following graduation he plans to attend Capital University or Kent State University.

Alex Lincoln, daughter of Dan and Sherry Lincoln of Magnolia, was the junior attendant. She has earned letters and honors in track. Alex also runs indoor track, is a member of the academic challenge team, the science club, the foreign language club and prom committee. She is an honor roll student. Following graduation Alex would like to pursue a degree in science.

Taylor Dye, the son of Brian and Shelly Dye of Waynesburg, was the junior escort. He is a member of Little Country Church. Taylor plays basketball, runs track and works at Waynesburg Carriage. He is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and the science club. Taylor also was a Young Marine for two years and graduated as runner-up honor recruit. After high school, Taylor would like to attend either Duquesne or Mt Union College.

Sophomore attendant was Kennedy Bowling, the daughter of Rob and Kim Bowling of Magnolia. She is a member of Faith Family Church. She plays basketball and is a letterwinner in softball. She also plays softball for the Twister Travel team. Kennedy is a member of Student Council and a merit roll student. Following high school she would like to a study nursing.

Escort for Kennedy was Sam Knox, the son of Steve and Beth Knox of East Sparta. He is a member of First Christian Church. Sam plays on an AAU basketball team and has coached a youth basketball team. He is a merit roll student and plans to attend the Ohio State University.

Freshman Attendant was Rymma McLaughlin, the daughter of John and Lucia McLaughlin of Magnolia., She is a member of Rivertree Christian Church. Rymma is on the high school gymnastics team and in the Leo Club. She is also a merit roll student. Rymma's interests for the future include pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.

Samuel Groff, the son of John and Crystie Groff of Waynesburg, escorted Rymma. Sam lettered in football this year, and he has already earned numerous honors on the football team such as tying a school record for most forced fumbles in a game and honorable mention IVC, special mention All-Eastern District IV and 1st team Press-News. Sam is the starting 171 lb wrestler for the varsity team. Sam has wrestled and earned many honors in the state youth tournaments. He plans to participate in track this spring. Sam is a member of Student Council.
