AREA PARKS ARE CLEAN & READY FOR SUMMER

EAST CANTON

VILLAGE PARK

The East Canton Village Park, located on 15 acres on Werley Road North, is a beautiful park that has two pavilions, playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, a half-mile walking track and three baseball fields with dugouts and bleachers.

The park is open for the public to use during the summer season, now through Nov. 1. Bathrooms with running water are also open until Nov. 1. During the off-season at the park, portable toilets are provided.

Park pavilions can be rented by the public. Rates are $50 a day for East Canton residents and $75 for non-residents. The large pavilion at the top of the hill has picnic table seating for approximately 78. Playground equipment includes swings, a big foot monster truck, playground set, Noah's Ark and slides. The smaller pavilion at the bottom of the hill seats about 48. Playground equipment in that area includes a train engine with three cars, playground set, monkey bars and slide. Both pavilions are equipped with electricity and charcoal grills.

SANDY VALLEY

COMMUNITY PARK

The Sandy Valley Community Park will be open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend for plenty of family fun.

The park will be open to the general public on Memorial Day weekend and then will close for a week. The park will again to the public after the last day of the Sandy Valley school year.

Park hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, and the pool is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., also seven days a week. The pool can also be rented for private parties in the evening.

During the month of May, ice cream can be purchased at the eat stand at the park. The ice cream is being sold from 7-8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Admission to the pool is $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for students and free for children 4 years old and under. Family, couple, single and student memberships are also sold. The price for a family membership, if purchased before May 31, is $145. After the 31st, cost is $160.

In addition, shelters can be rented for $10 during the week. The larger shelters can be rented for $100 on holidays and weekends, which includes a discount for swimming. There is one smaller shelter available for rental for holidays and weekends for only $60.

MAGNOLIA

VILLAGE PARK

With lighted basketball and tennis courts open until midnight, the Magnolia Village park is ready for summer fun. They also offer a newly installed sand volleyball court. The play ground area closes at dusk.

CANTON TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY PARK

The Canton Township Community Park is open now through Nov. 1 for the public to use. The park opens daily at dawn and closes at dusk. The park is located on Oyer Street S.E. between Sherr Avenue S.E. and Sandy Avenue S.E. near Walker Elementary School.

WHITACRE

GREER PARK

The 2,000-acre Whitacre Greer Park is currently reserved for horseback-riding only. The 3.2-mile Colby Trail is named after the property owner's first horse after he retired. During the 2006-09 lease with the Whitacre Greer Company, the park district will create a master plan for future development of the property that eventually is expected to include limited use for hikers and bicycle riders while maintaining an emphasis on dedicated equestrian trails. The park is open from dawn to 7 p.m. from October to April and from dawn to 9 p.m. from May through September.

Whitacre Greer park is located at 4290 Irish Road N.W. just outside of Magnolia.

ROTARY PATH

The Rotary Path walking track is located near the YMCA in Canton South on 45th Street off of Cleveland Ave.

FAIRCREST PARK

Faircrest Park is an 18-acre wooded park located on Faircrest Avenue S.W. one-half mile west of Cleveland Avenue. This pleasant little park offers open spaces for leisure walks and family picnics. Covered picnic shelters are available for family reunions and club picnics. Tables and grills are included with each shelter. The shelters hold 30-35 people and one shelter has a brick fireplace.

The park also offers a variety of playground equipment for the youngsters under age 6. A volleyball court, with a net provided, is also available. Remember to bring your own volleyball.

A nature path was recently developed at the park in conjunction with the F.O.W.L. Club of Faircrest Middle School.

This 18-acre neighborhood park features an open woodland of white oak, red oak, and beech trees. Spring brings the blooming wildflowers. One of Stark Parks original parks, Faircrest was established in 1967 when the Stark County Commissioners turned over management of this acreage to the new park district. A .4-mile grass trail meanders through the property.

PETROS LAKE PARK

Petros Lake Park is located 2.2 miles south of West Tuscarawas Street/Lincoln Way, immediately west of the Timken Faircrest Steel Mill. Petros is 94 acres in size and currently offers landscaped open spaces and a 1.2 mile shore-side trail for spending leisure time in the great outdoors. A wildflower/butterfly trail is also available.

Petros Lake is a 12-acre lake with several thousand feet of shoreline fishing. The 10.5 foot deep lake is stocked with walleye, catfish, bass and perch. Boating is not permitted.

There are several picnic areas are available including two covered shelters with tables and grills, electricity and horseshoe courts. A volleyball court is located next to Shelter 3. A net is provided.

The baseball fields are reserved by local leagues but available for the public when not used for youth baseball. The three ball fields can also be utilized as soccer fields.

Petros Park also is equipped with a 1.2-mile walking/jogging track that winds around the entire lake and features a crushed limestone surface.
