SANDY TOWNSHIP -- In response to a petition presented at the last meeting of the Sandy Township Board of Trustees, Richard Gallagher of the Outlaw Extreme Motorcross Park presented a petition to trustees in support of an event planned there.
Gallagher said the petition contained 243 signatures in support of the Freedom Rally 2008 Swap Meet & Party, planned for June 27-28. Of those, Gallagher said about 30 were from residents on Elson and Mottice streets, and the rest were from area businesses or people who have attended the event in the past. The petition presented at the last meeting, in opposition of the event, contained 25 signatures.
The full text of the new petition follows: "We, the undersigned, have no objection to the Freedom Rally that is sponsored by the C.M.R.O. (Concerned Motorcycle Riders of Ohio) and Region 8. This event benefits the Disabled American Veterans and helps fight for motorcycle rights in Ohio. Also we would like it to be known that we reside near and/or will contribute and/or have benefited and/or have participated in this or previous event(s) held at the Gallagher Farm on Mottice & Elson St., In Waynesburg, Ohio. All of which is in accordance with the law(s). In conclusion, these evens have helped the Disabled American Veterans, C.M.R.O., the community financially, and has not effected the quality of life. Thank you for your consideration and attention to this matter."
"We don't stand for any trouble out there," said Award Harper of Magnolia, who said he is a board member for the event. "Last year an ambulance was called because someone fell of a four-wheeler. This year, we're not going to allow four-wheelers.
"Our security really does a pretty good job."
Trustees said they would enclose copies of both petitions, along with a letter acknowledging the event and the petitions, and send them to the state Department of Commerce, Division of Liquor Control. Police chief Jeff Hager also will send a letter. The Department of Commerce determines whether or not to issue a liquor permit for the event.
In other business, trustees:
* HEARD from Fire Chief Dan Barnes that the fire department had received a grant from the state fire marshal's office for $900 to purchase a computer;
* HEARD the fire department made eight runs in March;
* REMINDED residents that the township cleanup days will be May 15-16;
* PAID bills in the amount of $19,769.78.
