Oral cancer screenings will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2-4 p.m. inside Mercy Dental Services, located on the second floor of the Surgery Center/Cancer Center building.
Mercy dental professionals will perform the exam and may use the VELscope system to help visualize abnormalities in high-risk patients. VELscope is an FDA approved non-invasive, hand-held device that uses fluorescence visualization technology to enhance the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue.
Oral cancer starts in the mouth, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal cancer develops in the throat.
Over 25,000 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year.
Oral cancer screenings are free, but registration is required. To register, call Mercy's Healthcare Connection at 330-489-1333 or 800-223-8662.
