Atwood Lake Resort is open for business

After being closed for a year, Atwood Lake Resort re-opened its restaurant and hotel facilities to the public Oct. 1.

Located in the Sherrodsville/Dellroy area, the resort's restaurant, Vistas, lives up to its name by offering stunning views of the lake as diners enjoy its new menu. From chipotle crab cakes that are quickly devoured to the juicy and tender chicken caprese layered with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, chef Matt Smith has created a menu that is both a feast for the eyes and the taste buds.

A graduate of Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburgh, Smith has worked in the culinary business for more than 20 years and actually worked at Atwood in the late 1980s.

"I want to use local produce as much as possible," he said. "Unfortunately because of the weather, we were not able to do so this year."

Smith says customers' favorite dishes are chicken marsala and hog wings, a pork twist to the traditional chicken wings. The dining room is open Tuesday through Thursday, 5-9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 5-10 p.m.

Vistas is open for breakfast, 6-10 a.m. Monday through Friday and 6:30-11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The breakfast menu includes country French toast, omelets, and Belgian waffles.

As of last week, Vistas had 80 reservations for its Thanksgiving Day buffet, more than any other Radius Hospitality-managed hotel this far in advance of the event. Open 11 a.m.-4 p.m., the menu includes oven-roasted turkey, maple-glazed smoked ham, herb-rubbed roast beef and baked tilapia oreganato, as well as the traditional side dishes and desserts. The buffet costs $21.95 for adults, and $11.95 for 12 and younger and is complimentary for those younger than 5 (does not include tax and service charge). Reservations are recommended by calling 330-735-2211.

Randy Budd, vice president of sales and marketing for Radius Hospitality, notes local residents and those living far away are excited to see the resort re-open.

Visitors may also visit The View Lounge from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday with food served until 9 p.m. and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday with food served until 10 p.m. The View offers visitors a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy lunch during the afternoon, or drinks with friends in the evening. The lounge features a large flat-screen television for the latest news or sports.

Opening soon outside The View will be an outdoor patio, allowing visitors a chance to enjoy the outdoors regardless of the weather. The patio will feature heaters to keep visitors warm on those chilly evenings.

The hotel has rooms available for both weekends and weekdays. The 104 rooms have been refurbished with new beds, refrigerators, microwaves and 42-inch flat-screen televisions featuring DirectTV. The white linens add to the room's crisp new look.

Budd points out the bed linens, including the comforters, are washed daily. He noted the rooms feature queen- or king-size beds to provide additional comfort for guests.

Guests will also enjoy the hotel's indoor swimming pool and exercise room.

Atwood Lake Resort is also perfect for conferences, with nine meeting rooms that can accommodate 10 people or 300 available.

Much to many brides' delight, Atwood Lake Resort is also accepting reservations for wedding receptions. The banquet facilities are open and already being booked into 2013. Deborah Oberlin, Atwood's marketing director, noted brides are scheduling their receptions, and some their weddings, for 2013. Those interested in holding their big day at the resort are encouraged to call the resort soon to see if their date is still open.

The golf club aspect of the resort will take shape next year. Budd reports the lighted Par 3 course, chipping and putting greens, chalet and state-of-the-art driving range is expected to open in mid-June.

The first 9 holes of the renovated golf course are expected to open in 2013, but golfers will have the opportunity to still golf 18 holes as there will be different tee sets. The remaining 9 holes will open in 2014.

"The renovated golf course will rival any golf course in the area," Budd said.

Atwood Lake Resort and Golf Club is located at 2650 Lodge Road SW, Sherrodsville, and may be reached by calling 330-735-2211.
