Men and women of all ages and fitness levels will benefit from a mixed martial arts (MMA) workout at Rock Solid. This business is co-owned by Terry Brinkman and Mike Bechtel and is located on 45th Street S.W. at the previous YMCA building.
Each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:15 p.m. MMA is offered. From 6:30- 7:15 p.m. Tae Kwon Do is taught. Tae Kwon Do is the world's most widely practiced martial art. It is a sport, an artistic discipline and a system of self-defense. The art of Tae Kwon Do develops posture, graceful movement, strength and attention to detail. In line with the necessary self-discipline of Tea Kwon Do, good behavior in school and adequate academic effort is expected from Rock Solid students.
On Monday mornings the Canton South football team conditions at this facility, taking the MMA class. Most of the players find it very effective and challenging. Head football coach Moe Dansika had this to say about Rock Solid, "As a head coach, I'm always looking for new state of the art workout programs that are fun and motivational for our players, yet rigorous and exhausting enough to get our athletes in top physical condition. The Rock Solid MMA workout has exceeded our expectations!"
Brinkman is a Canton South graduate and is now the resource officer at his alma mater. He is also the drug abuse resistance education officer for Canton Local. His kind demeanor could be deceiving as he is a fierce competitor. In 2007, he placed second in the State of Ohio in his division in Tae Kwon Do competition.
Success must run in the family as his son, Seth, competed nationally in Tae Kwon Do and took second place in 2006.
Brinkman's wife, Stephanie, works at Walker Elementary in the cafeteria. They have four children, Andrew, Sarah, Emily and Seth.
Co-owner Mike Bechtel lives in Perry township with his wife Kristi and daughter Bri.
Other staff members at Rock Solid are Jen Ripple, Bri Bechtel and Seth Brinkman. Bri, 16, is currently training with Olympic coaches with hopes of making the U.S. Olympic Team for the London 2012 summer competition.
The first class at Rock Solid is always free so there is no reason to not check it out. The cost is $50 for a month or $10 per lesson. Two family members can join for only $80 monthly.
Coming soon will be yoga classes as interest is shown. The Rock Solid staff hope to offer a Little Dragons class soon for age 5 and under. This will include tumbling, kicking and the martial arts discipline.
This school has been named for the following scripture: "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. " Psalm 18:2
