Karen Sanders was a teacher in the Conotton Valley School System for 30 years before purchasing the building at 2027 Walnut St., East Sparta in June. There has always been a grocery store there since it was built in 1912, but now there is so much more.
There is a restaurant, deli, coolers of pop and beer, Leanin' Tree greeting cards, Hershey's ice cream, magazines, lottery and cigarettes as well as a large variety of grocery items.
The grocery section of the building is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The restaurant portion is open from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. The breakfast weekday special is $2.49 for two eggs, toast, potato and bacon or sausage with the purchase of a drink.
For lunch there are a variety of sandwiches including pulled pork, Italian sausage and the Spartaburger. Lunch specials run around $4. On Tuesdays two hamburgers are just $2.50. Weekly lunch specials can be faxed on Mondays for carry-out lunches. Call 330-866-4151 to get on the fax list.
Pizza is available at the East Sparta Marketplace on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 4-9 p.m. and on Wednesdays for lunch. A large 14-inch one-topping pizza will cost $8.99. Sides of wings, French fries, chicken tenders, onion rings or mozzarella sticks are available to go with your pizza. There are different pizza specials each evening.
Deli items available include, Troyer's Trail Bologna and beef jerky, Cleveland bologna, other meats and a variety of cheeses. The current deli special is 50 cents off each pound of any meat or cheese.
Sander's daughter, Megan Eckstein, heads up the catering portion of this business. Items ordered can be picked up or she will deliver and set them up for your event. Catering options include Swedish meatballs, wings, crab-stuffed mushrooms, rigatoni, pulled pork sandwiches, veggie trays and much more. Meat and cheese trays are available. Ask for a catering menu when stopping in.
The biggest difference that shoppers will notice under the new ownership is a larger variety of grocery items and the reduced prices of them. Sanders has changed the purchasing method so that her cost has been reduced and she can pass that savings on to her customers.
In addition to Sanders and Eckstein, staff at the East Sparta Marketplace are DeeDee Scott, Raylene Muretes, Crystal Bierley, Tiffany Brownfield and Juanita Powell.
Watch for the Marketplace to carry hand dipped ice cream starting in the spring.
