A Guinness world record was shattered on July 16 at the third annual Flite Fest held at Furey Field in Malvern.
"We had 179 aircraft airborne for one minute which broke the previous record of 99 aircraft," said Austin Furey, Flite Test marketing manager. "The previous record was set at the Southeast Electric Flight Festival in 2008."
There were 300 registered pilots for the event but 179 were able to stay strong in flight. More were lined up to register but the registration was cut off at 300 because of how chaotic it could be with so many in flight.
The event itself was a success with registered pilots being over 1,200 with thousands more spectating over the course of the four day event. In only the second day the event was only a few hundred shy of the largest event of its kind in the world.
"We have more whole families flying in the sky this year," said Josh Bixler, general manager and host of Flite Test. "During our first year many were spectators but now they are all flying together. That is just amazing and the main goal of Flite Fest."
"Our big marketing push was all about this being a family event and it is great to see it pay off," said Furey. "It has always been about family coming together to enjoy the hobby."
Father and son Mark and Alex Merryman traveled from Severna Park, Maryland to Malvern for the event.
"I have a young son who is learning how to fly and I wanted him to be immersed in the Flite Test experience," said Mark Merryman. "This is our first year at Flite Fest and I feel that it is a real family friendly environment. Flite Test encourages kids to build their own planes and fly them which is great."
