FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

* The Stark County District Library held a Create a Castle Contest, the top winners were chosen at each branch. Steve and Diane Sanders and their children, Mitchell and Marina were the top winning family at the East Canton Branch. At the Sandy Valley Branch, the Bollinger family came home as the top winners. Jennie Bollinger, her son Josh and her Daughter Makayla sent their castle from the Sandy Valley Branch to be judged at the libraries main branch.

* Three Members of the Canton South Baseball Team, Chris Miller, Jordan Brace and Zac Barson, were chosen to participate in the Hank Miller All-star Team. The game was held at the Perry High School baseball field. In the second game South's Brace hit for the cycle and was awarded the Hank Miller Award which they gave to the teams MVP of the game.

* The CSE Federal Credit Union honored their retiring Board Member, George W. May Jr. of Magnolia. George all together had 42 years of volunteer service. In those 42 years May served in many leadership positions, as the chairman of the Supervisory Committee, chairman of the Personnel Committee, President of the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Board. Because of Mays 42 years of service The CSE Federal Credit Union created the "George W. May Jr. Financial Education Center" in honor of his service.

TEN YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

* Local Musicians Jenna Swihart and Vanessa Mockerman both from Waynesburg were chosen to play in the fourth annual Musical Youth South Band Honors. They would soon be in 7th grade and be participating in the Sandy Valley Junior/Senior High School Band. Their concert was held at Canton Centre Mall.

* Canton South's Hot Stove Team sponsored by Canton South Car Wash finished their season with an 18-2 record. The team includes, Brandon Davis, Luke Trissel, Collin McEndree, Dalon Croston, Brandon Parsons, Mark Trissel, Artie Hein, Jimmy Mullins, Derek Bates and Jonah Epling. The boys were league and tournament champions.

* The first annual Canal Classic 5-K Running race was held. It was held along the recently opened section of the Ohio and Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor, between Massillon and Navarre. There was also a family fun run and a walk. Major Sponsors of the event were Nickles Bakery and Runners Supply. All of the benefits from the race went to the projects of the Friends of Stark Parks and the Ohio and Erie Canal Corridor Coalition.

25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

*Miss Christine A. Bowe, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bowe and a 1984 graduate of Canton South High School was accepted in Ohio State University's College of Nursing. After finishing up her freshman year at Ohio State she started the next fall towards her nursing degree.

* Theresa Leary, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Micheal Leary was selected as a contestant in the 1985 Northeast Ohio's National Little Star Pageant. The Pageant was held at Stouffer's Inn on the Square The Pageant is the official preliminary to the Ohio National Little Star Pageant.

*Boy Scout Troop 203 of Peace Lutheran Church in Canton South held its court of awards. The troop attended camp Tuscazoar. They came home with a number of awards. Some of the award winners include; Aaron Casto, Richie Hussar, Ricky House, Bradley Hadden, Zachary Mesquite and Randy Christman.

50 YEARS AGO

* When YWCA summer classes were held at East Canton High School several cultural and recreational subjects were offered to the young ladies attending. Photos of the class members were published in the paper. They included photos of Joyce Darrah and Suzie Robinson in charm and poise classes, Jill Edwards receiving tennis hints, Sandy Irwin learning to sew, Mary Kinsey receiving baton twirling instructions and Kay Clapper doing arts and crafts.

* J.O. Fox, principal at Waynesburg Grade School, was retiring after a long career as a teacher and administrator in at Sandy Valley and other school districts. He had been in education since 1945 and had resided in East Sparta. He planned to do some traveling and reading during his retirement.

* Lights were being installed on the hill top track in North Industry, and a large audience had been attending the "kart races. Feature winners during the last Sunday event included Dale Smith, Bob Hixenbaugh and Doug Smith. Arline Burkhart won the powder puff competition.

100 YEARS AGO

* The joint annual picnic of the Lutheran Sunday Schools of Paris, Osnaburg and Mapleton was set to be held in Long's Grove in Mapleton. A festival was planned for the evening and the Osnaburg Band would furnish music. Clark Daum was secretary of the committee making arrangements for the picnic and festival.

* Citizens were making an effort to organize a football team in Waynesburg for the upcoming season. Probable players were Red Wagstaff, Clyde Williams, Paul Hawke, Earl Parker, Ray Parker, Howard Gruber, Smiley Ward, Sam McDonald, Ray Longabaugh, Seigle Johnson and professer Roshon.

* In respose to a call, a number of Grand Army of the Republic men and citizens met to make preliminary arrangements to erect a "suitable memorial" in Magnolia Cemetery. The memorial would be for soldiers in the community who were buried in the South during the Civil War. Clemens Burwell was the president of the GAR, Eli Bowman was treasurer, and W.L. Hime was secretary.
