FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
* Thirty points from Katy Arick and 26 from Caitlin Sharp were not enough to lift the Wizards over Mansfield St. Peters in the regional semi-finals. A late run by the Lady Spartans gave them a 76-71 victory over East Canton. The Wizards ended a stellar season with a 19-6 record.
* Shauna Masonbrink and Linnea Skipper, Canton South graduates, were closing out successful careers as members of the Malone College Lady Pioneers basketball team. The girls helped Malone to a 17-13 season their senior year.
* Rocky Laughlin, a Canton South graduate, was finishing a successful career at Mount Union College as a member of the wrestling team. Laughlin had amassed a 46-8 record while at Mount. He ended his career by competing at the Division III National Championship Tournament.
10 YEARS AGO
* The shot of sophomore Ashley Volpe swished in but it was just after the buzzer, and the East Canton Wizards dropped a close 53-52 game to Kidron Central Christian in the Div. IV District Finals. Beth Sternberg led the scoring with 22, and Adriana Mundy added 17.
* Wildcat wrestler and senior Rocky Laughlin placed fourth in the state wrestling meet in Div. II. This was his third trip to the meet.
* Walker Elementary School held a pep rally to honor students who were "champions in real life." Chasity Stanton was presented flowers by teacher Moe Daniska . She was honored for her positive attitude while going through operations and other medical procedures during the school year.
25 YEARS AGO
* Yolanda Youtz was chosen as the East Canton High School homecoming queen. She was escorted by Brian Hoffman. She was also a member of the East Canton Wizard basketball team.
* Several Scouts in North Industry Cub Scout Pack 200 received awards at the Blue and Gold banquet. They included Homer Jarrett, Stephen Newman, Greg Eibel and Jeromy Raycheck.
* Pending completion of a physical examination, Fred Hawk of Malvern was to be hired as the new Waynesburg Police Chief. He agreed to move to Waynesburg and he would be paid $400 a month.
50 YEARS AGO
* The Osnaburg Board of Education voted to give their teachers a raise of $100 a year in addition to their regular incremental raises. This would give starting teachers, with two years of training, a salary of $3,400-$4,200 per year. Those with master's degrees could make up to $6,050.
* The body of an unidentified man was found at NATCO Fireproofing Company in Waynesburg. Village Marshal Jack Bankert was trying to identify the man. Meanwhile, a service would be held at McCreery-Finefrock Funeral Home in Magnolia.
* Arrmy Pvt. Robert E. Jones of North Industry was receiving his basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. The 23-year-old was a 1955 graduate of Canton South High School.
100 YEARS AGO
* Stark County Pomona Grange met on March 5, 1909, in Louisville, with 500 people present. The forenoon was devoted to a business meeting for Fifth-Degree members. At noon, a dinner was given by Nimishillen Grange 1628. At 1 p.m., 23 delegates took the Fifth Degree Obligation, including Revell Yarger of Magnolia. Yarger was also the youngest Granger, and the reporter commented: "The older ones will be left behind if they don't look out." Others from Magnolia who attended were Bertha Foltz, Ruth Seeman, C.C. Miller and Marion Foltz.
* The Sandy Valley Teachers Association held its semi-annual session at Magnolia on a Friday and Saturday. Superintendent H.L. Bates was president of the group. The agenda for the event, including Rev. J. B. Kirsch giving the invocation, and Katharine Elson performing a violin solo. Speakers were also on the agenda.
* Hiram VanVoorhis and wife attended the Farmer's Institute at Osnaburg.
