FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
* The East Canton Wizards claimed their 12th district title with a 71-32 win over Mogodore. Junior Caitlin Sharp led all scorers, with 19 points, including five three-pointers. Classmate Katy Arick added 14 points.
* Nathan Ray was given the Chase Faiello Scholarship at St. James School. The scholarship was in memory of Chase, who had been a student at St. James before he lost his valiant battle with leukemia in 2003. Funds were raised for the scholarship by having a basketball shoot-a-thon, which was organized by staff members at the school.
* The Canton South Rotary Club was providing dictionaries for every third-grader in the Canton Local District. Rotary members Marty Bowe and Curt Bailey were pictured presenting dictionaries to Gabrielle Fatzinger and Sarah McGill, students at Prairie College.
10 YEARS AGO
* As a levy replacement was coming up, elementary students in Osnaburg Local were telling others what they liked about their schools. Showing their posters at Kress IGA were Jessica Gordon, Hannah Poole, Ryan VanVoorhis, Alli Burfield and Chris Wheeler.
* Cardinal Josh Farber was a champion in the heavyweight division at the Marion District Championships. He and teammate, Jim Abbott, would advance to the state meet.
* Rocky Laughlin of Canton South won the championship in the 112 lb. weight class and would advance to state. Laughlin defeated four wrestlers at the Firestone Tournament to earn the crown.
25 YEARS AGO
* David Morton, an eighth-grader at Faircrest Memorial Junior High School, won an all-expense trip to a Cleveland Cavalier away game of his choice. He won the contest by besting everyone in a series of basketball skills including sinking four of five fouls shots. He planned to see the Cavs play the Los Angeles Lakers.
* Quad Ambulance personnel delivered their fifth baby, when Bobby Bersaglini happened to see a Dellroy woman in distress in her car. An 8 lb. 10 oz. baby boy was delivered in the ambulance by Bersaglini and his wife, Julie, as well as Richard Dierick, Bobbi Grossen, Val Bennington, Linda Newbold and John Helman, all Quad volunteers.
* A few of Miss Connie Werley's fifth-graders at East Canton High School were pictured with their Valentines boxes. They included Bill Twiss, Eric Garrott, Vic Garman and Kelly Johnson.
50 YEARS AGO
* During a Canton Sectional Tournament game, East Canton Hornets lost a 50-49 heartbreaker to the Canton Lincoln Lions, in overtime. Coach Dan Dowling said he had his boys "sky high" for the game and they played one of the "finest games ever." Joe Wengerd, despite fouling out in the game, led in scoring with 13 points.
* The Ridgecrest Rest Home said they were saddened by the death of 101-year-old Clarinda Farber of Waynesburg. Representatives of the home described Clarinda as a "gracious lady," who was the last of the family of Jacob and Elizabeth Wadsworth, a pioneer Carroll County family.
* The Canton South Wildcats defeated North Canton Hoover, 53-32, in the Class AA Sectional Tournament. Gary Kirsch led the Cats with 16 points. He was closely followed by Ed Lenzy (playing with a fractured wrist) and Jerry Miller, who each had 15 points.
100 YEARS AGO
* Homer F. Cooper and Charles E. Beck of Magnolia attended the Cleveland Auto Show on a Friday.
* A Waynesburg area farmer drove to Canton one day and transacted all his business with the "greatest precision." However, as he started home he had a "firm conviction" he had forgotten something. He went carefully through his pockets to see if he had everything, but upon returning home his daughter asked, "Why, father, where have you left mother?"
* A sleighing party from Howenstine spent Thursday night at Henry Davis' home in North Industry.
* The second session of the Canton Township Teachers Institute was held in North Industry. Superintendent L.L. DeLap led in the "songs of the school." Elbert VanVoorhis talked about agricultural studies, and attorney S.F. Bowman spoke about "choosing an occupation."
