New students at Malone University will experience orientation week, Aug. 25-29.
Not only will they learn their way around the campus, meet their professors and make new friends, but they will also become acquainted with the community and its volunteer opportunities.
The two day event called "Into the Streets" will take place Thursday, Aug. 26 and Friday, Aug. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. both days. The program allows incoming students a chance to discover volunteer opportunities from which to choose throughout their college careers, while at the same time providing thousands of volunteer hours to local agencies and organizations.
"Into the Streets" was developed in 1995 by Marcia Everett, Ph.D. chair of the Department of Communication Arts and director of the College Experience program at Malone University, in an effort to incorporate volunteerism as part of the college learning experience while instilling in students a sense of the larger community beyond the campus. Students are introduced to a wide variety of community volunteer opportunities in hopes that volunteerism will become a lifelong habit.
In the past, students have volunteered at such locations as Calvary Mission, Camp Tuscazoar, CDC Preschool, Coleman Center, Habitat for Humanity, Hammer and Nails, Humane Society, Jewish Community Center, Malone Kindergarten, McKinley Museum, MRDD - various sites, North Branch Library and the Palace Theater. Students will be doing painting, yard work, landscaping, clearing trails, visiting with senior citizens, removing trash and debris, caring for animals, preparing packets or mailings, heavy cleaning, packaging food, sorting clothing, and more.
