Immunization changes to effect 7th graders, kindergartners

Published:

A booster dose of Tdap or Td is now required for entry into 7th grade. This is a result of a recent change to the Ohio Revised Code section 3313.671. Tdap is a combination shot of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis.

The change in law came about as a result of a significant increase in pertussis (whooping cough) cases in Ohio in the past 10 years. If the student has received a Td shot in the past 5 years it is not recommended that they get the Tdap, but proof of Td immunization is required.

Students entering kindergarten must now have a polio vaccine after their fourth birthday and two doses of varicella vaccine prior to entry into school.

Immunizations can be received from the student's physician or the Stark County Health Department at 330-493-9914.
